Fleet Managers Discuss How New Technologies Solve Operational Challenges at CUFF
Terex Utilities’ presentation featured several new technologies and operational aid concepts, all designed to provide solutions for safety and productivity challenges. The newest technologies from Terex Utilities includes wireless load monitoring for digger derricks, Load Alert for monitoring jib and basket weights on aerial devices, and the Z45 Utility Substation Articulating Boom Lift.
The wireless load monitor for digger derricks provides operators with the ability to determine actual load being lifted. Load Alert helps operators know if the boom condition is near capacity or overloaded through visible and audible alarms. Optionally, the system can send email and/or text notifications to designated personnel when an alarm condition occurs. Load Alert, for aerials, monitors boom angle, jib angle and length, winch line distance from the platform pivot point, and basket and jib load.
“The Z45 Utility Substation Articulating Boom Lift, a self-propelled aerial from our sister company Genie, with insulated boom tip, evolved out of discussions we had with customers who were looking for a solution to operating in substations,” said Joe Caywood, director of Marketing.
Terex Utilities also shared 2 other concepts with Forum attendees in order to gain feedback. Outrigger object detection would prevent outrigger deployment if an object is in the way, and a positive lanyard attachment would provide audio and visual warnings to the operator in the basket when controls are engaged and the lanyard has not been attached. “By listening to the customer and using that input throughout the design process, we are able to offer innovations that aid crews to follow their companies’ safe work practices,” said Mr. Caywood.
The company also featured the new Optima Series Aerial Device, with additional side reach, improved boom speeds and responsiveness, lower ground access, lower travel height, plus features that simplify maintenance. In addition, the completely redesigned Terex 330 and 650 Auger Drills that feature enhancements, such as radio remote controls, drill depth monitoring and return to hole center feature, that allow the operator to focus on drilling in the most productive manner possible.
