Nouvelles brèves Louis St-Arnaud accède à la présidence de l’AECQ Louis St-Arnaud est élu au titre de président de l’Association des entrepreneurs en construction du Québec (AECQ) pour l’année 2009. Monsieur St-Arnaud est président-directeur général du groupe Arno, qui comprend plusieurs entreprises actives dans l’industrie de la construction. Il est également vice-président IC-I de l’Association de la construction du Québec (ACQ). Membre de l’Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec et détenteur d’une maîtrise en administration des affaires, il possède plus de 20 ans d’expérience dans la construction lourde, où il a acquis son expertise en participant à de nombreux projets industriels, ainsi qu’à plusieurs projets de production et de transport d’énergie électrique. L’ACQ est très fière qu’un des siens occupe la présidence de cette importante association dans l’industrie de la construction. «Possédant une capacité d’analyse hors du commun et une excellente connaissance des dossiers chauds de l’industrie, Louis St-Arnaud est exactement l’homme qu’il faut pour ce poste», affirme le président de l’ACQ, Gilbert Grimard. Lors de son assemblée tenue le 3 février dernier, l’AECQ a également élu Claude Riendeau au poste de trésorier. Président de l’entreprise E.C.E. Électrique inc., monsieur Riendeau a été le président de l’ACQ de 2002 à 2004.
L’AMETVS dévoile sa nouvelle image corporative L’Association des manufacturiers d’équipements de transport et de véhicules spéciaux (AMETVS) est fière de dévoiler sa nouvelle image corporative. Quant à la nouvelle image, que vous prendrez plaisir à découvrir au cours de la prochaine année, il s’agit d’un visuel qui rappelle une route, une piste d’accélération, sur laquelle l’AMETVS oeuvre pour la croissance de l’industrie. Le véhicule, qui représente l’industrie, se fond dans cette piste, illustrant la vitesse, la fougue, le dévouement de l’association pour son industrie. La route, qui se dirige vers un seul et même point, est la représentation de ce qui anime l’AMETVS : la croissance de l’industrie. Le Fonds de revenu GENIVAR acquiert une firme en transport basée en Ontario Le Fonds de revenu GENIVAR est heureux d’annoncer l’acquisition d’ENTRA Consultants Inc., une firme basée en Ontario, spécialisée en transport. Dessau obtient un prestigieux prix international en ingénierie mécanique Dessau a remporté l’ASHRAE Technology Award 2009 dans la catégorie «New Public Assembly Building» (nouvel immeuble de rassemblement public) pour le projet du Centre communautaire de Mistissini réalisé pour le Conseil de la Nation crie de Mistissini. Cette prestigieuse distinction internationale de l’American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) vise à souligner l’excellence des concepts de chauffage, réfrigération, ventilation et conditionnement de l’air mis de l’avant par Dessau. L’événement de remise des prix 2009 a eu lieu à Chicago en février dernier. Dessau remporte un prix ASHRAE pour une deuxième année consécutive «Ce prix international, qui représente l’une des plus grandes distinctions au monde en génie mécanique du bâtiment, vient couronner les efforts de nos équipes d’ingénierie qui oeuvrent à trouver des solutions intégrées où l’efficacité énergétique et les principes de développement durable sont des critères déterminants dans le choix de concepts électromécaniques. Nos spécialistes ont de quoi être fiers», d’affirmer Jean-Pierre Sauriol, président-directeur général de Dessau. Le centre communautaire est principalement constitué d’un aréna, d’un gymnase, d’une salle d’entraînement, d’une bibliothèque et de bureaux. Dans le cadre du projet, le recours à des solutions technologiques novatrices dont la géothermie, une banque de froid et des roues thermiques, a permis la construction d’un édifice consommant 62% moins d’énergie qu’un bâtiment conventionnel du même type, ce qui correspond à une réduction de 350 t/an de gaz à effet de serre. Le jury de ce concours d’ingénierie composé d’experts internationaux évalue les projets en fonction de critères techniques précis, tels que le caractère innovateur des systèmes électromécaniques, l’efficacité énergétique, la qualité de l’air, la facilité d’opération et d’entretien, l’impact économique et la rentabilité du projet, ainsi que l’impact environnemental.
ESRI Canada reconnaît les avancées en matière de géomatique dans les communautés autochtones À l’occasion de la Conférence régionale des utilisateurs tenue à Val-d’Or, au Québec, le 9 février dernier, ESRI Canada remettait un prix d’excellence à la Corporation de développement Anokitage. Jean-Sébastien Guy, directeur de comptes pour ESRI Canada, a remis le prix à Linda McMartin, coordonnatrice de la géomatique à la Corporation de développement Anokitage, pour souligner la façon dont la Corporation a amélioré, à l’aide d’un système d’information géographique (SIG), les conditions économiques, sociales et culturelles des communautés algonquines de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue. «Le service de géomatique de la Corporation, explique monsieur Guy, a été sélectionné en raison du grand leadership dont il a fait preuve. Il a joué un rôle de premier plan dans l’avancement des compétences en géomatique dans plusieurs communautés algonquines de la région.» Organisme sans but lucratif, la Corporation de développement Anokitage gère les activités de développement économique et de formation à l’intention des entreprises issues de la Première Nation du Témiscaminque. Promouvoir le développement durable de la communauté, en particulier dans le secteur des ressources naturelles, est au cour de la mission de la Corporation. Pour y parvenir, elle s’emploie notamment à stimuler l’entrepreneuriat, à créer des emplois, à aider à la planification stratégique et à favoriser le développement économique selon les traditions, les valeurs et la culture de la communauté. La Corporation a adopté avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme la technologie SIG et s’en est servie pour atteindre nombre de ses objectifs stratégiques. Elle utilise notamment le système ArcGIS de ESRI pour trouver et localiser, en collaboration avec Santé Canada, les plantes et les animaux qui présentent des marques de contamination. La technologie sert aussi à dresser des cartes de la biodiversité dans les zones environnantes, ainsi qu’à former les futurs directeurs forestiers de la Première Nation du Témiscaminque. Comme l’explique Linda McMartin : «Bien connaître la technologie SIG et se consacrer à l’amélioration continue de nos compétences en la matière, revêtent une importance capitale pour la Corporation, la Première Nation et les autres communautés algonquines. En plus de jouer un rôle déterminant dans nos industries forestière et minière, la géomatique, par sa nature intégrée, nous aide à comprendre et à protéger notre environnement.»
Norme ISO pour l’évaluation de l’efficacité énergétique des bâtiments neufs La nouvelle norme ISO 23045:2008 établit, pour le secteur de la construction, des lignes directrices spécifiques applicables à la conception de bâtiments écoénergétiques. Le secteur de la construction est reconnu comme une source majeure d’émissions de gaz à effet de serre. Ces émissions de CO2 dégagées dans l’atmosphère pourraient être sensiblement réduites avec l’application de Normes internationales traitant de la conception écoénergique des bâtiments et des installations mécaniques dont ils sont équipés. ISO 23045:2008, Conception de l’environnement des bâtiments – Lignes directrices pour l’évaluation de l’efficacité énergétique des bâtiments neufs, fournit des lignes directrices pour intégrer les exigences énergétiques dans le processus de conception, ou pour obtenir les valeurs théoriques d’efficacité énergétique pour les bâtiments neufs. La norme a pour but d’aider les concepteurs et les parties prenantes à recueillir et à fournir les données utiles nécessaires à chaque étape du processus de conception et à satisfaire aux objectifs de conception dans la construction des bâtiments. ISO 23045:2008 s’applique aux bâtiments neufs ainsi qu’aux systèmes de chauffage, refroidissement, éclairage, eau chaude sanitaire, eau chaude de service, ventilation et systèmes de régulation associés. La prise en compte de l’efficacité énergétique dans le processus de conception vise à réduire la demande énergétique par une approche globale du bâtiment comprenant l’analyse de l’emplacement du bâtiment, la définition de son enveloppe, les systèmes et produits énergétiques. Pour Stephen Turner, responsable du groupe de l’ISO qui a élaboré la norme, «l’intensification des efforts déployés aujourd’hui dans le monde entier en vue d’une utilisation rationnelle des ressources naturelles fait progresser le marché pour des bâtiments conçus dans une optique d’efficacité énergétique et équipés d’installations écoénergétiques. Dans le secteur de la construction, le potentiel élevé des économies d’énergie réside dans la conception de bâtiments ayant une meilleure performance thermique, des équipements mécaniques plus efficaces et, naturellement sur leur durée de vie complète. ISO 23045:2008 aidera le secteur du bâtiment à concevoir des bâtiments répondant à un niveau d’efficacité spécifié. La norme vient s’ajouter de manière très opportune à une série toujours plus étoffée de normes ISO relatives à la conception de l’environnement des bâtiments selon le cadre établi dans la norme ISO 16813, Conception de l’environnement des bâtiments — Environnement intérieur — Principes généraux.» ISO 23045:2008 sera utile pour : ISO 23045:2008, Conception de l’environnement des bâtiments – Lignes directrices pour l’évaluation de l’efficacité énergétique des bâtiments neufs, a été élaborée par le comité technique ISO/TC205, Conception de l’environnement intérieur des bâtiments. Elle est disponible auprès des instituts nationaux membres de l’ISO.
Contrat à long terme pour la gestion des combustibles nucléaires usés de la centrale de Leibstadt AREVA et KKL, le producteur suisse d’électricité, ont signé le 29 janvier 2009 un contrat en vue de la fourniture à ce dernier d’emballages pour l’entreposage des combustibles nucléaires usés de la centrale de Leibstadt en Suisse. Selon les termes du contrat, AREVA fournira à KKL 15 emballages, le client pouvant lever des options pour des emballages supplémentaires tous les 10 ans. Le montant total du contrat pourrait ainsi atteindre plus de 130 millions € (200 millions $). Depuis plus de 45 ans, AREVA conçoit et fournit des emballages de transport et d’entreposage à ses clients dans le monde entier. Le groupe réalise des transports de matières nucléaires pour l’ensemble du cycle du combustible.
La CCÉG offrira un cours pour inspecteurs municipaux La Coalition canadienne de l’énergie géothermique (CCÉG), l’association nationale représentant l’industrie de la géothermie au Canada, annonce la publication d’un cours conçu spécifiquement pour aider les inspecteurs et responsables des bâtiments en milieu municipal à mieux comprendre et à inspecter les installations géothermiques de manière plus méthodique. Le cours, compilé et édité par un spécialiste des codes de sécurité et des bâtiments de la ville de Calgary, a été développé grâce à une collaboration avec la ville de Calgary et d’autres municipalités. Ce cours est le produit de plus de dix mois de travail de la part de la CCÉG et de ses partenaires. Cet ajout au portfolio de cours du Programme de qualité globale en géothermie de la CCÉG vise à répondre à une demande des intervenants nord-américains pour un accès facilité à du matériel de formation à jour qui reflète les normes, codes et pratiques exemplaires en Amérique du Nord, et soulevée depuis plus d’une dizaine d’années lors de consultations à tous les niveaux de l’industrie de la géothermie. Le développement du cours, amorcé grâce à une contribution de Ressources naturelles Canada, a été finalisé par le biais d’un financement complémentaire du Fonds permanent de formation de la CCÉG. Une partie des revenus de formation sont dédiés à la révision et à la mise à jour annuelle des cours. Le cours sera disponible en anglais et en français, et sera enseigné par un inspecteur municipal. La CCÉG désire rappeler aux consommateurs, aux propriétaires de projets, et aux municipalités qu’ils devraient insister pour que tous les travaux de géothermie réalisés sur leur territoire soient certifiés par la CCÉG.
SANY s’installe en Allemagne En 2009, le fabricant d’équipements de construction chinois SANY a décidé d’investir 100 millions € (160 millions $) aux environs de Cologne en Allemagne, afin d’y établir un centre de R&D et une base de fabrication de machinerie destiné au marché européen. Grâce à ce projet d’investissement, SANY compte profiter des ressources internationales, et améliorer sa compétitivité afin d’accroître sa part de marché en Europe. Cet investissement de SANY en Europe fait suite à celui réalisé en novembre 2006 en Inde et à la signature en septembre 2007 d’une entente visant l’installation d’une usine de fabrication aux États-Unis.
PRINOTH acquiert le Groupe véhicules sur chenilles de Camoplast inc. Le Groupe Leitner Technologies est fier d’annoncer son acquisition du Groupe véhicules sur chenilles de Camoplast, une division de Camoplast inc. La division acquise sera intégréeà Prinoth, la division de damage alpin du Groupe Leitner Technologies. Conséquemment à cette transaction, Prinoth gérera la production et les ventes de tous les véhicules utilitaires et municipaux de même que l’actuelle division de damage alpin. Les ventes des véhicules municipaux et utilitaires produits par le Groupe véhicules sur chenilles de Camoplast ont connu une augmentation constante au cours des trois dernières années. Les véhicules utilitaires ont été conçus et produits par Camoplast pour les utilisations suivantes : transport, transport d’outils, travaux publics et gestion de la végétation. Camoplast domine le marché nord-américain grâce au degré élevé de raffinement technologique de ses produits et à son service de soutien supérieur. Monsieur Michael Seeber, président du groupe Leitner Technologies, a affirmé : « Cette transaction constitue une étape très importante pour Prinoth dans son projet d’élargir sa gamme actuelle de produits. Nous ajoutons à notre présente activité de base un deuxième pilier principal indépendant de notre commerce saisonnier de dameuses de pistes. Leitner Technologies possède un réseau étendu composé de près de 100 centres de vente et de service partout dans le monde. Avec la gamme de produits que nous avons récemment acquise, nous prévoyons une croissance considérable des ventes dans des pays tels que la Chine, l’Inde et la Russie. Cette acquisition se traduira par une économie d’échelle, pour chaque type de véhicule chenillé, dont tous les clients de Prinoth bénéficieront.» Depuis 2005, Prinoth compte 100 employés au Canada et aux États-Unis, la moitié d’entre eux travaillant au siège social nord-américain situé à Granby (Québec). L’acquisition sera officialisée au cours du mois de février 2009. Doosan Selects ORBCOMM-Based Telematics Application from MobileNet as Standard Equipment ORBCOMM Inc., a global satellite data communications company focused on two-way Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, and MobileNet, Inc. a global solutions provider specializing in heavy equipment telematics applications, recently announced that Doosan Infracore America (DIA) has selected MobileNet’s TrakPak application as the GPS system to be included as standard equipment on new qualifying Doosan DX Series Excavators and DL Series Wheel Loaders. MobileNet’s TrakPak application is an onboard vehicle monitoring and communications system that helps heavy equipment users improve operational efficiency by remotely monitoring machine usage. The system tracks and communicates key productivity and performance information, which can be accessed through an online web site, providing a detailed examination of individual machine’s operation. The system uses ORBCOMM’s global low Earth orbit satellite constellation for communications, relaying critical positioning and operational data from the machine to the MobileNet back office application.

Chesapeake Energy Corporation Signs with ESRI Chesapeake Energy Corporation (CE) can now easily obtain geographic information system (GIS) software by using its ESRI enterprise license agreement (ELA). The ELA has simplified the petroleum company’s efforts to expand its GIS by providing easier access to software and resources as well as a higher level of expertise. Owning natural gas and oil wells across several regions, CE is the largest producer of natural gas in the United States. When the company implemented GIS in its land department, demand rose quickly, and in just three years, its user community grew from 6 people to 700, with applications in place across multiple departments. The GIS team found it frustrating to try to keep up with the rising GIS demand while buying software piece by piece. With the ELA in place, software pricing is more consistent, making it easier for the company to forecast a GIS budget. It also supports a faster means to obtain software and immediately meet its needs. In just two years, the company’s GIS staff grew from 5 analysts to nearly 50, with another dozen GIS IT support staff, all requiring high-level tools. Now three years out, GIS has become deeply embedded in the organization, and the actual user base continues to expand as employees adopt GIS to visualize company data. “When we took a hard look at our metrics of user growth, we realized the ELA was a good deal for us,” explained Julie Parker, CE’s director of GIS services. As part of its agreement, CE has opted to include the ESRI Enterprise Advantage Program (EEAP). “We now have an assigned ESRI representative who understands our specific needs, keeps us informed about ESRI’s development paths, and helps us to plan accordingly,” Ms. Parker noted. “It’s like ESRI has its finger on the pulse of our business. An example of the CE GIS staff’s innovation is an application that integrates with the corporate human resources database to create maps useful for managing teams assigned to various prospect areas. The ESRI ELA will also support CE’s planned ArcGIS Server project, which will further ESRI software use within the company.

ISO standard for assessing energy efficiency of new buildings The new International Standard ISO 23045:2008 will help the building sector to contribute to energy saving by providing it with specific design guidelines. The building sector is recognized as a major contributor to the build-up of greenhouse gases. These emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere could be reduced significantly through the application of International Standards relating to the energy-efficient design of buildings and building mechanical equipment. ISO 23045:2008, Building environment design – Guidelines to assess energy efficiency of new buildings, provides energy-related requirements for the design process, or to achieve targeted values of energy efficiency for new buildings. The objectives of the standard are to assist designers and practitioners when collecting and providing the useful data that are required at different stages of the design process and to fulfill building design objectives. ISO 23045:2008 applies to new buildings and is also applicable to systems for heating, cooling, lighting, domestic hot water, service water heating, ventilation and related controls. Introducing energy efficiency in the design process leads to a reduction in energy demand through a global approach to the building, including analysis of the building location, definition of the building envelope, energy systems and products. Mr Stephen Turner, leader of the ISO group that developed the standard, comments: "Today’s worldwide increase in efforts toward rational use of natural resources is increasing the markets for energy-efficient buildings and building equipment. The building sector holds great prospects for energy saving through the design of buildings with improved thermal performance and increased efficiency of mechanical equipment, as well of course through the entire range of buildings’ lifecycles. ISO 23045:2008 will help the building sector design buildings to a specified level of efficiency. It is an invaluable addition to the growing group of ISO standards for building environment design organized within the framework of ISO 16813, Building environment design — Indoor environment — General principles." Crane Operator Certification Program Accredited by ANSI The National Center for Construction Education and Research announces the Crane Operator Certification Program: Industrial/All Purpose, Rough Terrain/All Terrain, and Rubber Tire Truck Mount has received accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The crane certification program is a collaboration of NCCER, North American Crane Bureau (NACB), and Prov™. The Crane Operator Certification Program identifies individuals with the professional knowledge and skills worthy of being designated as certified crane operators. It includes both written assessments and practical examinations that meet or exceed current ASME B30.5 consensus safety standards, as well as OSHA 1910 standards, for mobile crane operators. Assessments are available in four categories: telescopic boom, lattice boom, boom truck, and industrial/all-purpose cranes. Written assessments are administered throughout the country by NCCER Accredited Assessment Centers meeting the crane endorsement requirements, and the practical examinations are given by certified practical examiners. Practical examiner certification workshops are administered by NACB. One of the unique features of this program is on-demand testing. The program is structured so a crane operator can take the written assessment and practical examination and receive results back the same day. An operator’s certification is good for five years.

New Guides to FRP Reinforcement for Concrete Structures The American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) recently announced the availability of three new guides to fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) for concrete reinforcement that could help broaden markets for composites use. The documents are published by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and developed by the ACI 440 technical committee, in which ACMA is a participant. “With the publication of materials and construction specifications in mandatory language, ACI 440 has provided engineers and contractors with reference documents that save them an inordinate amount of time and, more importantly, give them the tools for safe and quality implementation of FRP as internal reinforcement to concrete,” says Dr. Antonio Nanni, professor and chair of the University of Miami’s Department of Civil, Architectural & Environmental Engineering. “It is an important step forward for the entire construction industry and ultimately the public.” Dr. Nanni is the primary author of ACI 440.5 and 440.6, two of the three new ACI publications.
