Heavy Machinery On the Hook with Unprecedented Ease

 

 

 

The engineering firm Teco from Neu-Ulm and custom machinery manufacturer ematec AG from Memmingerberg, both based in Southern Germany, are jointly revolutionizing installation processes in the manufacturing industry.

From now on, machinery and system components weighing many tonnes can be positioned in production halls more safely and easily than ever before. This is made possible by ematec’s new HS 850 hybrid heavy-duty crane.

With its 5-stage telescopic articulated boom, it achieves maximum lifting capacities with a load moment of up to 850 tm while maintaining minimal dimensions. Thanks to its compact design, with a width of just 2,420 mm and a transport height of 2,550 mm, this world-first innovation fits through any standard hall door.

The HS 850 is battery-electric and therefore operates completely emission-free. The battery can be recharged via a detachable Power Pack or a stationary power supply.

Whether it is a new milling or drilling centre or an injection-moulding machine, the latest generation of systems can increasingly combine several processes simultaneously. The increase in automation generally also means an increase in size and weight, making the installation process more difficult.

“This is where the HS 850 really comes into its own. With its high load moment of 850 tm, it can handle current and future generations of machinery. During development, it was important to us to create a powerful and flexible, yet extremely compact system that fits through all standard hall doors and can be transported by road on a low-loader,” explained graduate engineer Robert Haid, managing director of the Teco engineering firm based in Neu-Ulm.

Mr. Haid developed the HS 850 together with his team. Following the successful design of a prototype for W. Biedenbach GmbH, a specialist provider of machinery transport and relocation as well as indoor crane work, the HS 850 is now officially entering the market in collaboration with ematec AG.

ematec, is a custom machinery manufacturer with almost 30 years of experience and a team of more than 60 employees. It is now the manufacturer of the HS 850 and is responsible not only for complete production, but also for worldwide marketing and service.

The new HS 850 from ematec is ideally suited to lifting and moving heavy loads in confined working areas. Its range of applications is diverse and extends far beyond production halls. The HS 850 also ensures safe and efficient operations in outdoor settings, for example when arranging heavy battery storage systems in multiple rows or during track and railway construction work. Thanks to its compact design, the hybrid heavy-duty crane is also suitable for work in tunnel facilities.

Among its major practical advantages, the HS 850 largely eliminates the need to dismantle operating equipment and parts of buildings, meaning that costly interruptions to operations and downtime can be almost entirely avoided.

The HS 850 is operated by radio remote control, allowing users to control movements precisely and reliably. Integrated load-moment monitoring ensures safety during all crane movements and prevents overloading.

“Depending on the application and load weight, users can select different programmes with optimised outreach for the individual telescopic sections,” said Robert Haid.

Thanks to the advanced electric drive of the hydraulic variable-displacement pumps, the crane control system is optimised for emission-free use in production halls. The electric motors are powered by the installed high-voltage battery. This can be charged either via a stationary 380 V supply at 63 A, 32 A or 16 A, or via the detachable Power Pack with combustion engine and generator. The Power Pack can also be used as an emergency generator.

The compact design of the HS 850 ensures efficient and flexible transport. On the road, it can be transported to the job site on a conventional low-loader; on uneven terrain, self-propelled all-terrain carriers can be used. For use in production halls and on level, firm ground, a chassis with all-wheel steering and its own drive is the ideal solution.

The HS 850 is loaded and unloaded using its integrated outriggers, meaning the crane is ready for operation immediately upon arrival at the job site. High stability is guaranteed, as the HS 850’s outrigger beams can be telescoped flexibly from 6,000 to 10,000 mm.

A variety of accessories allow users to extend the HS 850’s range of applications in practice. Teco has developed a rope winch with a sheave head specifically for vertical load movements, which can be fitted to 6th telescopic boom section.

For work directly beneath a ceiling, a heavy-duty tip with load hook and sheave head is available. For particularly large working ranges in height and outreach, as well as for lifting over obstacles, ematec offers a jib extension for the HS 850.

“We see enormous potential for the new crane because there has never been a product like it before, and the HS 850 is exceptionally well developed and engineered. It is a genuine innovation that fits us perfectly,” said Manfred Eberhard, CEO of ematec AG and himself an experienced developer of high-end systems.

The RBC-D rotor blade yoke developed by ematec is regarded worldwide as a benchmark for lifting equipment used to install wind turbine blades. Enercon, Germany’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, now uses more than 30 ematec yokes, which are considered the most efficient and safest on the market.
