Modernized Lighting System Increases Visibility at YLW

A new airfield lighting system was recently turned on at Kelowna International Airport (YLW), in British Columbia, specifically to increase safety of arriving aircraft. This new industry leading LED lighting system is a modernization of the aging infrastructure and includes updates to the lighting on the runway, taxiway, approach, signage and all control systems.

“The transition to LED airfield lighting delivers two important benefits for YLW: enhanced safety and improved energy efficiency,” said Sam Samaddar, CEO of YLW. “The brighter, more precise lighting makes the runway and airfield environment more visible to pilots, particularly during wildfire smoke events and low-visibility conditions. It is an investment that supports both our sustainability goals and our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of airfield safety.”

Although the new LED airfield lighting system is designed to guide arriving aircraft, people in the community may notice a new array of 5 flashing lights at each end of the runway. These lights are a normal part of the upgraded system and are not a sign of an emergency or hazard. Instead, they help pilots identify the runway more easily and safely. This modernization is part of YLW’s ongoing commitment to innovation, safety, and operational excellence, helping ensure the airport continues to provide a safe, reliable travel experience while maintaining its position as one of Canada's leading airports for years to come.

This infrastructure upgrade and investment is a direct result in the exciting growth of YLW and is on track with the airport’s master plan to serve the increasing needs of the Okanagan Valley.  This project represents an investment of over $9 million paid through airport revenues and reserves with no taxation impact to members of the public.
